I know, I know. I promised to write more often. That promise still stands. For now, let me try to get you caught up on the planning of SouthSide Film Festival's '07 edition. We promise more days of films, more opportunities to screen EVERY film on our roster. The jury is crazy with last minute screenings, all in preparation of selecting our program for this year's Festival. As I mentioned previously, the jury process is tedious, but rewarding, and in the end we promise another FANTASTIC roster of films to be screened here in Bethlehem, June 19-23.
This SouthSide '07 promises to be BIG: MORE days of screenings, more workshops to appeal to a more diverse audience, more discussions, more parties, and more MORE! Besides planning the Festival, we're also busy planning our May 11 Fundraiser, promotional materials, and publicity leading up to the Festival in June.
In addition to my jury duties, I continue the arduous process of "inviting" films to our Festival, providing our audiences with a much more diverse palette. This process involves constant screening of potential "Invitationals", including reviewing Classics that time has forgotten, Cultural Focus possibilities, and other recommended films. It's all about making SouthSide the absolute best it can be. We're not competing with Sundance, SXSW, or Tribeca, but instead are here to supplement their offerings and present alternatives to the normal offerings at the local cineplex.
We're very proud of what we offer at our Festival. It's about the filmmaker, the story told, and the presentation. It's certainly NOT about Hollywood blockbusters or the Hollywood machine. Film is an Art Form and should be celebrated with excellence, it's not about HOW MUCH $$$ you've spent (... or wasted in the case of the Hollywood norm). If you're looking for the "same old story", retold with lots of money and mediocre acting... visit the multiplex. If you want to see something special, enjoy visiting your local Art House Theatre, and LOVE the idea of REAL Independent Filmmaking, often on a shoestring budget.
This is for REAL. Come and enjoy it all. I'll be back later with some of my film reviews.
Until then... butter up that popcorn, turn down the lights, and crank up that projector.
